Let’s be real girls, it’s happened to all of us: you see the perfect dress, it looks great on the hanger, it looks amazing on your best friend, but on you, it just looks ‘bleh’.

Well… it could all be in your skin tone. When it comes to dressing up, your skin can be your best accessory – because certain colours can make your skin look incredible. It’s just about getting it right. With this quick how-to, we’ll have you dressing for your skin tone for your next night out.

Dark Skin

Stick To: warmer colours. Think deep purples, soft pinks, any shade of yellow – or our favourite: gold, bronze or coppers. As long as it’s in the warm side of the spectrum, you’ve got it spot on.

Avoid: black or brown dresses – cool colours (think blues, silvers, greys).

Your Best Bet: dark-skinned girls can rock white like it’s nobody’s business.

Medium Skin

Stick To: jewel tones, these are the rich colors that resemble gems like emeralds, rubies, sapphires and amethysts. Blues – from navy to royal, bright and richer pinks as well as greens are really flattering on your complexion.

Avoid: brown, beige, caramel, orange and very pale pastels in any colour.

Your Best Bet: go bold and colourful to really make your complexion pop.

Olive Skin

Stick To: any shade of green, from bright lime to natural olive, green is what will bring out your naturally warm tones.  Think red: cherry red and rose look great too.

Avoid: unlike other complexions, olive-skinned girls can pull off pretty much any hue. Lucky.

Your Best Bet: bring out that natural glow with pinks.

Fair Skin

Stick To: think any shade of green – from olive to grass, emerald or lime. Navy blue or grey will flatter fair skin. Try reds – strawberry or deep red, raspberry and deep purple, all of which can bring out a hint of colour in your cheeks.

Avoid: steer clear of neon colours, white or black which don’t do much for fair-skinned girls.

Your Best Bet:  jewel tones work wonders – especially emerald (green), turquoise and amethyst (purple).
